Acknowledgement

I have spent several years observing, wondering, and searching to find missing components that keep students from being successful. It is through experiences, challenges and the use of several types of reinforcements to change behaviors, attitudes and thought processes that I have come to realize that the change must come from within.

I have been a witness to the fact that many students do not see the purpose of going to school. Time and time again I have seen that students exhibit behaviors, thoughts and attitudes that keep them from being all they can be. Through much time, commitment, dedication and perseverance I have also come to realize that many students do not like being told what to do and that they have the tendency to blame other people and conditions for their failures.

Students at the middle school level seem to be very self-centered. Until they can search within to find the reason for something, little change takes place. It is through self-awareness, self-evaluation, and personal inventories that the changes can and will take place.

Middle School Mantras are daily lessons that help students find purpose and meaning for their education. They also offer students a daily lesson to be aware of how their attitude, behaviors, and thoughts bring them either failure or success.

I am currently introducing these lessons to my students with special needs and I am amazed at the desire, focus and attention they give to these lessons on a daily basis. They love to do them because it is all about them! They are beginning to realize that they are the ones responsible for their success. It is my hope that the project 45 Middle School Mantras and Activities will enhance students in the areas of emotional, mental, social awareness, and growth. I want to give them hope and purpose in their abilities as students to meet the challenges of everyday life with positive behaviors, attitudes, and choices.

Dedication

I would like to dedicate this volume to the Universal Spirit for gifting me with a career path that inspires my compassion for students. It is the spirit of compassion that continues to drive me to create writing projects that allow students to see the importance of their education on a daily basis. It is through years of experience and observation that I find both encouragement as well as disturbances for those students who succeed as well as those who are challenged to be successful in the educational process.

I would like to dedicate this volume to my mother, Joan Thorpe, who has always carried within her heart this same energy and drive of compassion toward the students she ministered while in the Beecher Community School District.

I would like to thank my sister Lisa for her belief in my writing projects and in the positive changes it can bring about in the lives of many students. I also want to thank her for making this web site possible, and for building a partnership with the development of Eagle Wings Publications.

I would like to thank my father for his belief in me and his financial backing of Eagle Wings Publications. Thank you dad for accompanying me with my conferences.

I would like to dedicate this volume to Mrs. Gabrielle King for her continuous support, encouragement, and faith while editing and proofreading each lesson.

I would like to dedicate this volume to Mr. Michael Barry for his artistic ability in designing the cover pages.

I would like to dedicate this volume to all of my students for their continuing effort to be successful in overcoming everyday challenges. Their energy and willingness to learn has inspired me to write this volume.

I would like to dedicate this volume to all of our educators that give daily of their time, energy and commitment to serving their students. It is because of them that students are able to learn and understand things that are vital to their future success. I want you to know that I have deep respect and honor for all educators who daily shape the minds of their students and give them hope and a sense of direction and purpose.
